What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are the good guys in the fight against the evil free radicals. Conjure up Amazon Warriors armed and dangerous in the fight against long term disease and you have a pretty accurate picture what these brave and courageous fighters are like. For healthier lives we need these antioxidants in our diets, through the foods we eat. antioxidants are found in foods such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, spices, red wine, dark chocolate, and whole grains. If it was a plant once – there are antioxidants present, depending on the type of processing.

  1. I enjoyed your segment with Tracy discussing olive oil. You had mentioned a specific way to identify authentic pure olive oils, and (oh gee surprise), I have forgotten what code I should be looking for. I live in Calgary, so I should be able to find a true blue brand. If you can recommend a brand I would be grateful. Thank you so much.
I enjoyed watching you on an older program in the 1980’s….I think it was called “harrow smith” or Harvest… Anyway just wanted to thank you as it influenced my food preparation for my two wee babies at the time.

  2. A vegetarian diet is inherently healthful because vegetarians consume less animal fat and cholesterol (vegans consume no animal fat or cholesterol) and instead consume more fiber and more antioxidant-rich produce- another great reason to listen to Mom and eat your veggies !

    1. Its an interesting subject cholesterol.
I agree that vegetarians who are following a healthy eating plan do eat more healthful foods rich in fibre, and more produce as well. Cholesterol doesn’t make cholesterol, saturated fat does. So you are correct, when you aren’t eating sat fats, your cholesterol levels will be lower unless you are a cholesterol responder or a person living with diabetes. Different rules apply.
      Peace, love and fibre,
