Chocolate Covered Oranges

I love oranges. I love chocolate. And together they are spectacular.

Most chocolate covered oranges include extra sugar to make a syrup – I skipped that part. Making these treats less sweet with a citrus tang and healthier to boot!

{Note: best to eat these the day you make them}

2-3 navel oranges, well scrubbed and wiped dry

10 oz dark chocolate – I used 3 Dove Dark bars – Dove uses high antioxidant cocoa when making their dark chocolate. So that makes this recipe heart healthy. Pinch me!

  • Place parchment paper onto a large baking sheet. Set aside.
  • Slice the oranges into about 1/4 –inch (5 mm) thick slices.
  • Then cut them in half and remove the little bit of white stem.
  • Put orange slices into a medium saucepan.
  • Add just enough water to cover the slices, bring to a gentle boil, drain right away.
  • Place drained orange slices onto a clean tea-towel to dry.
  • Make sure the slices are dry to the touch before going onto the next step. (if the slices are wet when you dip them into the chocolate, the chocolate will seize, which means it becomes a huge hard lump – not a good thing).
  • Break the chocolate into small pieces, place the chocolate in a small saucepan, heat over low heat, stirring until melted.
  • Dip orange slices into melted chocolate leaving a bit at the top of the orange chocolate free and place on prepared pan.
  • Let the chocolate set. Any leftover melted chocolate in the pot, eat. Hello, of course!
  • Serve that day or store the chocolate covered oranges in a covered container in the fridge for up to 1 day, store in layers with parchment paper in between each layer. Place on a platter at least one hour before serving, cold chocolate doesn’t have the same flavour. If the oranges weren’t dry there may be some condensation – pat dry before placing on platter.

Nutrient breakdown – none – remember its a healthy treat and you may have one or two or even three! πŸ™‚
