The Gift of Time

One of our dates was snow shoeing – I’m the short blob on the right

Many Christmases ago my husband and I decided that we didn’t really need any more stuff, what we really needed was to spend more time together.

Between our work commitments, my travel schedule, his hockey nights, our families, my really early mornings getting ready for TV which means really early going to bed times so I don’t look and feel like a bag of dirt with a belt on, what we really needed was spending more time together and veg’ing out in front of the TV didn’t count.

We decided to give each other our time and Date Night or Date Day was conceived.

We started off with twice a month dates, just the two of us and have morphed that into three to four dates a month.

Date Night #1 is either a movie or a play

Date Night #2 involves food of some sort

Date Night #3 free form, usually a walk, or an adventure like snow shoeing last year

Date Night #4 whatever, no plans, just see what happens

We even take turns picking the date. We’ve been to burger places and Canoe during Toronto’s Winterlicious. (Guess which one I picked) We should become film critics we’ve seen that many movies and we are working on seeing more live theater.

And it’s been wonderful, because the date really became more about reconnecting and falling in love again, than the actual movie or meal.

All we really have is time to share. Stuff never really makes you happy, but relationships and memories do.

I wished I’d come up with this years ago, although I wouldn’t have gotten that Shop Vac that he bought for me one Christmas, seriously, he bought me a Shop Vac……………………………………………..

Here’s to another year of Date Nights and new adventures.

    Hi Marilyn

If you think a shop vac is over the top, consider the lot of a woman in the sailing community whose husband gave her an anchor for her birthday. No it wasn’t me, fortunately. They later divorced – she had apparently morphed into that anchor and found herself slowing him down…..

A Shop Vac! Kinda makes you feel all warm and cozy doesn’t it? What was he NOT THINKING? Where did you get that great springy Christmas hat which you wore on BT? Whenever I think of that I smile! How adorable!

Love your recipes and hints. (As God is my witness, I shall never boil asparagus again!)

    Warm regards,
    Rosanna
